Shift work is a schedule that was created for production to allow a continuous work force
in a 24-hour shift. When this is implemented it not only increases the mental health of the
workers, but also work-related injuries began to rise. The negative effects of shift work with
work related injures are often attributed to lack of concentration, fatigue, and a circadian rhythm
disruption and/or misalignment (Prince, 2011). A large majority of industrial accidents that have
occurred can be attributed to human error as a result of human error. According to the
International Labor Office statistics, roughly 120 million occupational accidents happen annually
at workplaces worldwide. Out of those 120 million, 210,000 are to be fatal injuries. There are
more than 500 men and women that are killed by occupational injuries every day.

On December 3,1984, a gas leak from the Union Carbide pesticide factory resulted in
over 10,000 deaths with an estimated500,000 injuries. 40 tons of the hazardous chemical Methyl
Isocyanate (MIC) was released into the atmosphere accidentally. This was the result of poor
hazard management, the use of early warning systems, and the perception of all risks involved.
Errors made by the shift workers at the time were found to be a major factor in the severity of the
disaster. Risk assessments done by the United States for the Bhopal Plant showed evidence of a
chance of an accident, but the management at the time chose to ignore the recommended safety
