Agatha Christie

It's been 100 years since author Agatha Christie produced Hercule Poirot, the popular

private investigator novel, and began her career as one of the most famous writers of her day.

Her detective novels and short stories sold more than four billion copies. Despite her strong

popularity as an author, Christie frequently claimed to be the "slow one in the family," and often

found it exceedingly difficult to write and spell. Christie has also been affected by dysgraphia,

and potentially dyslexia.

Christie was homeschooled as a child and was not required to learn how to read until she

was eight years old. However, at five years old, Christie taught herself how to read years before

she was required to. Christie and her mother were both passionate storytellers, and later Christie

wrote in her memoir that she started her interest in becoming an author at the age of eleven when

she started bringing her stories to print and publishing them in the local newspapers. Living with

learning difficulties however did not hinder her from being the best-selling author to date.

Learning disorders

Learning disorders refers to the disabilities observed in children when learning activities,

including reading, writing, and memorizing, are not carried out. Child learning disorders are the

most common developmental conditions diagnosed in children who go to school with increasing

prevalence in the US(Zablotsky, et al., 2019). There are various causes of learning disorders

including genetic factors inherited from parents that affect neural development, injury to the

brain, and environmental factors. During the prenatal stage, when the mother is exposed,

environmental factors such as exposure to smoke and lead have been intricately linked to

learning disorders in children (Knopik, 2009). The learning disabilities result in changes in

cognitive functions that impair the impaired child's reading and successful listening, thereby

preventing the teachers from passing on normal understanding of the course materials to the

students.

Abnormalities in neuronal functions in the brain that occur during development are the

main cause involved in learning disorders(Shonkoffand Phillips, 2000). Two functional imaging

studies suggest a contribution of cortical areas and the cerebellum as far as the areas or

abnormalities that contribute to dysgraphia(Hoorn, Maathuis, &Hadders-Algra, 2013). A large

study indicated that cortical areas in all regions of the brain are involved – frontal, temporal,

parietal, and occipital(Hoorn, Maathuis, &Hadders-Algra, 2013). Two lesion studies confirmed

cerebellar involvement(Hoorn, Maathuis, &Hadders-Algra, 2013).The findings of the study on
