Democracy Task 3- Segregation in America

US History: Stories of American Democracy – D267

“QSM2 Task 3: Segregation in America”
Section A
After the American Revolution, the newly formed government of the United
States

Became increasingly interested in expanding westward. However, as they
encountered

Native American tribes inhabiting on these lands, the government began to
view them as an

Obstacle to their expansion and development. The government believed
that they were

culturally and intellectually superior to the Native Americans and that it was
their duty to

"civilize" them. (Library of Congress n.d.) A notable aspect of American
history is the

concept of manifest destiny. Many believed that it was God's will for them
to expand their

land and achieve success at any cost. Unfortunately, this belief was used as

an effort to

assimilate them, church officials were often sent to live with the Native
Americans on their

restricted lands. The primary objective of the church official was to
transform the culture

and beliefs of the Native population. Any individuals observed engaging in
their customary

religious practices were forcibly removed. Male members were conscripted
into military

service, while both genders were recruited by the Bureau of Indian Affairs
to serve as

Educators, administrators, craftsmen, medical professionals and
agriculturalists. In the

Past, Native American children were taken away from their families and
homes, and were

placed in boarding schools as a means of assimilation into American
culture.

Experience was deeply traumatic for many children as they were forced to
