Les 8: Democracy
We will read and discuss David Harvey’s discussion of “The Right to the City”, the rst
chapter in Rebel Cities: From the Right to the City to the Urban Revolution (London/New
York: Verso, 2012), 3-26.
David Harvey is one of the founding fathers of
geography. is a British Marxist economic geographer,
podcaster, and Distinguished Professor of anthropology
and geography at the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York (CUNY). He received his PhD in
geography from the University of Cambridge in 1961.
Harvey has authored many books and essays that have
been prominent in the development of modern
geography as a discipline. He is a proponent of the idea
of the right to the city.
In 2007, Harvey was listed as the 18th most-cited author of books in the humanities and
social sciences in that year, as established by counting citations from academic journals
in the Thomson Reuters ISI database.
Harvey's early work, beginning with his PhD (on hops production in 19th century Kent),
was historical in nature, emerging from a regional-historical tradition of inquiry widely
used at Cambridge and in Britain at that time. Historical inquiry runs through his later
works (for example on Paris).
We are going to start with the end of
the text, as always. The robot is a
very interesting neighborhood to
discover. He says: dispossession is
what we saw in the trailer. People
need to leave their house. It isn’t the
best house, but still, it was their
home.
He discusses how we can restore the
right of the people who are getting
out of their own home.
The point is: who are we talking
about? Who is going to pro t from
the new city? Bring on the question
of who? And you have a big
discussion, economical and political
ghts.

, Tondelier: the city of Ghent and Tondelier nv are jointly developing the brand new district.
No green talk, this is a truly sustainable new construction project in Ghent with
contemporary apartments, lofts and town houses with gardens. This project is the only
one of its kind in Europe and o ers massively slimmer living with more enjoyment. The
rst residents set foot on shore in 2018.
Torkens We are committed to rewarding the district in the Rabot-Blaisantvest district in
Ghent. Torekes are the currency of the neighborhood. Who in Rabot-Blaisantvest causes
neighborly care, neighborhood care and environmental care can be exaggerated by
Torekes.
All-inclusive architecture assignment for a preliminary typological design for the whole
Rabot site in Ghent, elaborating on the existing preliminary urban planning study. All-
inclusive architecture assignment for the realisation of phase 1 of the buildings (primarily
social housing) and the private and public outdoor area.
