,3.2 AN AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
1. DECOLONISATION:
Is moving away from “western” concepts and going back to our own African roots.
It is a way of reclaiming our ethnicity and uniqueness, which is very important for young people to
understand and take into consideration.

2. AFRICAN COMMUNALISM:
This is the way in which rural areas in Africa have been functioning. It is a way of life for certain
African people and they mindset will not change.
3. UBUNTU:
In education ubuntu means the connecting of humanity as a whole. Mutual benefits and
independency form between a per and their community through Ubuntu. Ubuntu acts a one of the
fundamental factors of foundation in education.

4. AFRICANISATION:
This is the process in which interpretation and the defining of the African culture and identity takes
place. It offers a sense of belonging through cultural familiarity in the classroom.

5. INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE:
This is knowledge passed down throughout the years to each generation, almost things like myths,
traditions , folktales etc.

4.1.2 MY TEACHING PERSPECTIVE
1. What does teaching mean to you?

Teaching means having the opportunity to enrich and fill young minds with knowledge that
will equip them with the skills they need to become professional and ethical grown-ups.

2. How would you best describe teaching and what it involves?

Teaching is when an individual is trained with the proper skills and provided tools to educate
learners with content that is only learnt through explanations and experiences, together with
practice.

3. How do you see your role as a teacher?

1

, Stuvia.com - The Marketplace to Buy and Sell your Study Material

To help young minds thrive in everyday problem-solving , educating them about our
heritage
,history and biology. Teaching learners about how the world works and why. It’s learning
and discovering new things together with your students everyday. Teaching is a
neverending learning experience.

4. What is your understanding of learning?

They say knowledge is power. So I guess I think that the more you learn about things, the
better you understand and the more you know about it. And the more you know about
things defines your intelligence.

5. What do you expect to learn or gain from this process of observation and teaching
practice?

A better understanding of how to teach children without being a horrible “ rule enforcer”. I
would like to understand how the different methods of teaching work with each age group. I
would love to gain the right idea of how to discipline students in a manner that doesn’t
enforce negativity, I want to pick up the positive ways of how to keep learners interested in
my lessons. And I want to learn how to boost confidence which will result in productive
student performance.

4.1.3 MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY (BELIEFS)
a. Why you want to be a teacher.
Because I appreciate curious children and especially those who want to know things. It
intrigues and enlightens me how a student that isn’t able to speak more than 20 words of
English blossoms into the most confident child in a matter of time. I guess I’m trying to say is I
love seeing children progress, it gives me hope for a better future. I believe that given the right
tools and proper manners instilled in them , these children will be great leaders and drive this
country to new heights.

b. What subject and age group you would like to teach and why
I would like to teach English as well as Life Sciences to the 8 – 13 year old age groups.
Well English because I’m very fluent and good at grammar etc. And Life Sciences because I
enjoy the experiments and facts behind it.

c. How you believe teaching should take place.

2

, In a warm, comfortable, colourfully decorated, content filled, and learning conducive
environment.

d. How you believe learners learn.
Through proper teaching methods and a properly facilitated environment filled with the
appropriate technological and educational resources needed.

e. Why you believe teaching is a vital profession.

Because the county and economy and community grow and benefit more from educated and
professional people. It lessens poverty and crime levels if individuals are educated and literate.

f. How you believe you can make a difference.

By enriching my learners with knowledge, skills and manners to become the best people they
can be.

g. What learning gains you are expecting to achieve during your teaching practice.

A variety of teaching methods and styles.
How to deal with discipline.
How to care for special needs children.
The correct and professional way of dealing with students and factors affecting their
performance in the classroom.

4.1.4 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY IN CONTEXT
4.1.4.1 INTRODUCTION

Give one example and description from your own school experience regarding
1. Situated learning (incident in the school or classroom):

The way the students failed to understand anything that the Afrikaans teacher was trying to
say. It was really hard to watch.

2. Constructivism (what you remember and what you learnt from the incident):

I’ve learnt that you need to start from the basics to get the children to understand which is
not what the educator was doing, instead she just reprimanded them for not being able to
understand a language that was neither their 1st nor 2nd language.
