AC 3.1 - Plan a campaign for change relating to crime

The crime I have chosen to campaign for is domestic violence as this crime is severely unreported as
victims feel they don’t have enough evidence and people won’t believe them or their report won’t
be taken seriously. Therefore, victims feel trapped and if they can’t do anything so this campaign
aims to help victims when reporting domestic violence and after care to help get their life back to
normal. This campaign was inspired by the many shocking cases of domestic violence such as the
case of Clare Wood, who was abused and murdered by her boyfriend.

Aims and Objectives

My campaign, Stand Up, Speak Up, has three main aims which are crucial in the success of my
campaign. Our first aim is to raise awareness of domestic abuse to encourage more victims to report
it. This is important as people will have a better understanding of domestic abuse and victims will
feel more comfortable in reporting it. Also, victims will have more support from friends and family if
they have a better understanding. Additionally, some victims may not be aware they are a victim so
by raising awareness and providing information they may be encouraged to report it. We aim to
raise awareness by posting 500 leaflets every 6 months to educate people. We will also have social
media pages to post additional information to support victims in coming forward and we aim to get
around 300 shares per month. My second aim to raise money so we can use this to provide victim
support such as temporary accommodation and counselling. Personally, I believe this is very
important and essential as this would encourage victims to report domestic abuse if they know they
have a safe place to go where they can feel supported. Also, by providing counselling it helps victims
to get their life back to normal. We plan to achieve this by raising about £1,500 through donations,
which are linked in our social medias (gofundme), and by sales of our merchandise. Our final aim to
work towards legal change so that when a case of domestic abuse is reported the offender is not
allowed to have any contact with the victim until the court case. This will prevent any further abuse
from happening and make the victim feel less fearful and vulnerable. To help achieve this aim, we
will create a petition which will be linked in all our social medias and we plan to gain at least 10,000
signatures so this change in law can be discussed in parliament.

Target audience

My target audience are female victims of domestic violence mainly between the age range of 16-40,
as this is typically when women tend to experience domestic abuse as 1 in 4 women are a victim of
domestic abuse at some point throughout their life. Women are the most likely group to be victims
of domestic abuse and they may not report it or reach out for support as they feel like they are in a
vulnerable position and are scared of consequences from the offender or may have loyalty towards
the offender. Also, women are typically perceived as weak by men and it’s a social stereotype that
women are vulnerable which allows the typical offender (a man with close relations to the victim
such as a boyfriend or husband) to continue with abuse without fearing consequences for their
actions, such as the victim reporting the crime.

Methods and materials

,Mia Lunt

Due to my target audience, I have carefully selected my campaign methods to target this specific
group of people. The first method I have chosen to use is social media and the platforms I will use
are Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. By using these platforms to promote my campaign I will be
able to reach the full spectrum of my target audience and provide all necessary information about
domestic abuse and how our campaign can help victims. Also, social media will help my campaign to
reach a large audience and raise awareness about domestic abuse as approximately 2.3 billion
people use social networks. Using social media will benefit my campaign financially as it is free to
use so any money raised can be used on the production of materials such as leaflets. Additionally,
social media allows links to be shared so we can promote our campaign for legal change to get more
signatures and our gofundme page to gain donations. Also, social media pages are easy and quick to
update meaning there will be regular posts which helps our campaign to gain more support and
therefore help to achieve our aim of raising awareness about domestic abuse. The materials I will
use to promote my campaign are leaflets as these are cost effective as they are relatively cheap to
print, so will leave us with enough money in our budget to produce more materials. They will also
help us with our aim of raising awareness as they include necessary information and facts about
domestic abuse and encourage victims to report abuse. Leaflets are effective as they allow us to
reach a wider audience of people that maybe don’t use social media or someone who has never
come across our campaign before. This means our campaign will gain more support. Also, relevant
links to our campaign such as our social media pages and gofundme page will be on the leaflets so
people can find out more information and also share our campaign to raise further awareness. I have
also chosen to produce merchandise to promote my campaign and the items I will create are t-shirts,
hoodies, phone cases and bracelets. I specifically chose these items as my target audience is women
so bracelets are more appealing to women but the clothing will be unisex so that anyone can
support the campaign and help us financially. The merchandise will include our campaign logo, name
and links to raise awareness which will increase support for our campaign, therefore also increasing
donations or encouraging others to also buy our merchandise. To make our materials we only
require everyday software as we can make our leaflets using publisher and use a printer to print
them ourselves or find a printing company, such as Vistaprint, by using the internet. To access and
set up our social media pages we only require internet access. Similarly, to create our merchandise
we only need internet access to gather images and to find a printing company.

Finances

Social media is our most cost-effective method as it is free to set up and use, meaning we can use
our budget to produce our other materials such as the production of our leaflets and merchandise.
Also, social media can be used to make an indirect profit as we can promote our merchandise and
gofundme links, allowing people to purchase items or make a donation towards our campaign and
the money we raise from this can be used to print our leaflets and posters. We went with the choice
of using social media instead of a TV advert as a prime-time slot can cost up to £250,000 which is a
lot higher than our budget. Our first financial cost comes from the printing of our leaflets and
posters. We did a lot of research to find the cheapest possible way to produce a lot of leaflets as we
will not make any profit as they free to take but they are essential in helping us achieve our aim of
spreading awareness. We finally decided to use a printing company called instant print as the overall
cost only totals to £13 for 500 leaflets. This is cost effective as it only requires a small amount out of
our budget. Therefore, this leaves us with plenty of money for the production of our merchandise.
To produce our initial batch of leaflets I will use my own money as it is only a small amount and we
can then gain support for our campaign by distributing the leaflets, which will increase our donations
meaning we can use this money for our future materials. We did also consider using posters but
decided it would be more financially beneficial to only use leaflets as it was quite expensive to print

posters, with one being £12. Therefore, we opted for leaflets as they don’t cost too much to produce
and contain more information about the campaign than posters. The production of merchandise will
require using the largest amount out of our budget as although we searched for the cheapest
products, they were still quite expensive. To pay for our merchandise we will use money we have
gained in donations from our gofundme as we will promote this on our social medias and in our
leaflets. The first item we wanted to make are bracelets and we want to produce around 150 at a
time. The bracelets cost 50p each to produce meaning it would cost £75 overall. The bracelets will
be sold for £3 each, meaning at £2.50 profit is made on each bracelet and overall a profit of £375 on
bracelets alone. We also wanted to produce pin badges but after a lot of research we decided not to
as they were very expensive. The hoodies and t shirts will be the most expensive to produce. We
looked at many websites and decided upon using logosforpolo as it was only £14.20 per hoodie and
£2.30 per t-shirt. In our initial batch of merchandise, we will produce 30 hoodies costing £426 and 50
t-shirts costing £115. The hoodies will then be sold for £20 each meaning a £174 will be made and
the t-shirts will be sold for £10 each making a £385 profit. The final item we want to make are phone
cases as we believe these will be very popular. We looked on many websites and found on average it
would £2 per phone case which is a reasonable cost. We will make 200 phone cases costing £400
and then sell for £15 each meaning a profit of £2600 will be made which is a lot of money and can be
used to provide temporary accommodation and counselling for victims. Overall, a £3534 profit will
be made just from the sales of our merchandise.

Timescales

Stage 1: Research – approximately 1 month

During this month we need to ensure that we have a clear, up to date and detailed understanding of
all aspects of domestic abuse as this will help our campaign to be more successful. Firstly, we will
research about the typical victims of domestic abuse so we establish who are target audience is and
who we are going to be working with and help. We also need to ensure we have a very in depth
understanding of all aspects of domestic abuse so we can plan towards all situations. This
information will include the effect on the victim, family, friends and the community which is a ripple
effect of victims. Then we need to create victim profiles to cater to the victims needs to help them
recover and get their life back to normal, such as supplying them with money and temporary
accommodation and this is important for us to be able to encourage victims to report it. Also, this
better helps our understanding of why domestic violence typically goes unreported and then we can
address the causes and support the victim in coming forward. We will also need to look at existing
evidence and resources regarding domestic violence such as police crime statistics and existing
campaigns to see what methods they used and how successful they were. To research this
information, we will use the internet, social media, police reports and the official home office
statistics as they are very reliable.

Stage 2: Design – approximately 2 weeks

The designs on my social medias, leaflets and merchandise need to be visually stimulating as this will
catch people’s attention and raise awareness of my campaign, therefore I believe 2 weeks is a
suitable time frame to achieve this. We will need to create a simple but effective logo that links to
our campaign and will be instantly recognisable. This logo will then be features across all our social
medias, leaflets and merchandise. For our leaflets we will need to gather key information about our
campaign, giving detail but also keeping it quite short so people are more likely to read it. We will
also need to find images that link to our campaign and are effective but not too disturbing as we
don’t want to upset or trigger anyone with the images used. We will then need to link our social
