05.10 Crafting Chiasmus and Anaphora Worksheet
Amelia Setser
Directions: There are two parts to this assignment. Read each section carefully and follow the
instructions.
Part 1: Analysis
Explain in two to three sentences each the meaning, effect, and effectiveness of the following chiasmus
examples:
1. “I wasted time, and now time doth waste me,”—William Shakespeare, Richard II
This chiasmus describes how someone wasted their time doing unimportant things, and now it is
too late to do what is important. There is nothing left to do but let time pass. This creates an
effect of loss and sorrow and is very effective in its message.
2. “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.”—John F. Kennedy, speech
to the United Nations General Assembly
In this chiasmus, Kennedy explains that if humans do nothing to stop conflict, then the war will
destroy them. The effect of this is to encourage the end of war, and because it is presented as an
ultimatum, it is very effective.

live.”—Socrates

no purpose in life. The effect is to discourage gluttonous acts and persuade the audience to life
for a reason, which is done effectively.
Explain in two to three sentences each the meaning, effect, and effectiveness of the following anaphora
examples:
4. “Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;”—Lord Alfred Tennyson, from “The Charge of the Light Brigade”
The meaning is that they are surrounded by canons and the soldiers are being fired at. The effect
is to vividly describe the war scene, and the anaphora is effective in doing so.
5. “We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing
confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may
be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the
fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills.”—Winston Churchill, Speech to the House of
Commons
The meaning behind the speech is to inspire and motivate soldiers in wartime. Churchill uses
