Unit 6: Travel & Tourism: Assignment 1: Task 1
P1, P2, M1
‘Preparing for Employment in Travel & Tourism’
Presented by Aran Chong-Kwan
P1: You have been asked to describe career opportunities for a minimum of three component
industries in the travel and tourism sector, e.g. Travel Agents, UK Tour Operations, Airlines,
Cruising and Visitor Attractions.
The evidence is to be presented as a careers leaflet with clear identification of career opportunities
through promotion and
progression routes.
The aim is to help the students understand more about careers within each of the industries, not
just one job role, enabling them to see how careers are built up over time, taking advantage of
opportunities for promotion and progression from one job or company to another.
P2: Next you are required to put together a fact file in WORD to describe two specific jobs in detail.
This should include comprehensive descriptions of each job, giving the following
information:
1. Job title
2. Role
3. Main duties and responsibilities
4. Entry requirements
5. Progression opportunities ‒
covering the full range of opportunities available.
You could design your own job descriptions and person specifications, but you must not
present as evidence copies that have been provided by travel and tourism organisations.
Specific factors affecting those jobs, such as seasonality, must be clearly indicated. The
two jobs selected could be within the same or different component industries and these
could be the ones selected for P1. It is recommended that in terms of career
development, it would be useful for you to select two jobs that are of personal interest to you and
you they might aspire to in the future.
M1: In order to help the students be aware of the similarities and differences of the jobs you have
been asked to write a report that compares the two jobs. The report should be detailed and
suitable for interested students to take away with them to read in more detail. You should clearly
state how and why the two jobs are different and how they are similar.
, Career Opportunities
‘P1: You have been asked to describe career opportunities for a minimum of 3 component
industries within the travel and tourism sector.’
‘In this assignment I will be briefly describe multiple career opportunities that are available in the
tourism industry.’
In accordance with the ‘World Travel & Tourism Council’ (WTTC) the tourism industry is massive and
diverse when it comes to its individual sectors: -
Airlines/Transportation.
Events/Conferences/Exhibitions.
Arts & Culture.
Accommodation, Foods & Beverages.
Ancillary Organisations; Car hire etc.
Eco-tourism.
Outdoor Recreation.
Airlines:
Within the sector of airlines there are an endless amount of job opportunities for progression and
promotion. The sector is a system of transportation and is involved with the aviation industry
moreover. An example of working role would be a ‘Flight Attendant.’ A flight attendants’ role is to
provide remarkable customer service and ensure the passengers safety and comfort while onboard
the flight. They can help ensure their safety by demonstrating safety procedures, supporting and
comforting passengers if needed and serving within the in-flight shop i.e. food, drink, accessories
etc. The job and role of a flight attendant can be progressed by becoming the ‘Head of Cabin Crew’
as the flight attendant manager being able to transfer to a long-haul airline, therefore, presenting
more work opportunities.
Furthermore, another job role than can be progressed further would be an ‘Airline Ticket Agent.’
These agents operate at boarding gates checking passengers’ tickets before they board the plane.
This job requires good eye detail and excellent customer service. This job can progress from an
airline ticket agent to becoming ‘Head Ticket Agent’ or a Ticket Agent situated for long-haul flights.
Finally, a ‘Schedule Co-ordinator.’ The job and duties of include recording and planning what flights
the pilots and flight crew work on, what times and when. This job progress can lead to becoming a
‘Senior Schedule Coordinator’ and even a ‘Chief of Schedule’ further down the lines of work.
Accommodation Sector:
The accommodation sector includes;
Hotels.
Hostels.
Air B&B’s.
Apartments.
Guest Houses.
The main role of someone working within accommodation would be a ‘Hotel Manager.’ A manager
is responsible for managing and keeping the daily procedures and operations of a hotel. A hotel
manager is already a highly progressed role; however, it can be progressed onto being a Hotel
