English Imperialism TASK 1

A1. The political motivations for English Imperialism came from the need to
expand territories and gain political power in order to compete with Europe
economically. England heavily relied on crops that were grown in the
Americas such as sugar, tobacco, and cotton. By controlling these products,
England could be seen as a competitor on a global scale and gain the power
they desired.

Although England saw the claiming of the Americas as a cheap way to get
ahead, the Crown didn’t actually have the money necessary to fund the
expeditions or colonies. To solve this issue, the monarchy issued charters to
weather businessmen for land claimed for the crown, giving them a small
portion of profit while also repaying favors. (Norton,
2015)

A2. During the colonization of the Americas, England essentially became
bloated with people who were unable to find work. A solution proposed by
the wealthy was to send these poor and jobless to the new colonies in the
Americas. Many of the people who
went to the Americas in search for work ended up as indentured servants,
forced to work for those who paid for their voyage for an agreed upon set of
years to pay off the debt.

Although there were plenty of free workers and indentured servants, slavery
became very prevalant in the colonies, consisting of Africans or the captured
indeginous people.
Slaves could be bought as easily in the markets as coffee or other commodities. (Norton,
2015).

Another social pressure was the Protestant Reformation. Queen Elizabeth I
was tolerant, but the Stuarts that followed her reign were not and many fled
from England to the colonies. They hoped they would be able to practice
their beliefs without repercussions
in the new lands. (Norton, 2015).
