The chapter shows Duke's meeting with Nomhi under the tree. Nomhi was reading
the Xhosa book Don Jadu by S.E.K. Mqhayi. Then Duke appeared. This shocked
Nomhi. That development reminds her of the old days when she was shocked by
Nzima at the river. Nomhi says he must not play this way and says she is busy
reading a book.
Duke looks down on Xhosa books, saying Xhosa writers do not know about mes-
sages. He says he is reads them just to pass. Nomhi teaches him that if you look at
the book you do not look at the author's knowledge but you look at the message
,that it brings. Duke says he will try this book written by S.E.K Mqhayi because he is
a well-known writer. He once read a book written by this author, “The Case of the
Twins”. Duke takes time asking nice questions about the book. Duke says he will
read it so that he can tell her what he learns.
Duke reaches the main reason he is there. He says he wants to “operate a mouse”
(just talk to her). He says he must just talk and she must listen (Dubuk’ ubukele).
Duke starts by admiring her beauty, and Nomhi thanks him. Duke eventually says
that he loves her and she does not agree because she has her own person that she
has loved since they were children. Duke is angry that Nomhi rejected him because
of course he isn’t used to being rejected. He says he feels sorry for her and that
she will make a mess of her life with this person. Nomhi says not to feel sorry for
her. Duke is angry again and Nomhi says he must leave her to her dreams.

them to pass.)
4. UNomhi wayefunda eyiphi incwadi? (Which book was Nomhi read-
ing?)

by S.E.K Mqhayi.)

naphakade? (Who is this person who Nomhi will love eternally?)
- NguNzima, isithandwa sakhe. (It is Nzima, her love.)
9. UDuke waziva njani emva kokwala kukaNomhi? (How did Duke
feel about Nomhi’s refusal?) - Waziva enomsindo, kuba akaqhelanga
le nto yokwalwa ngumntu. (He felt angry because he is not used to
this thing.)
In this scene we see Matesh and Thembi waiting for Duke to arrive. They wanted to
know how his meeting with Nomhi was. He arrived but he did not have good news.
Nomhi said she did not like him and did not hide it from him (in the horns). Duke
blamed Matesh and thumb saying they had betrayed him. Duke's rejection led him
to join the choral choir. They criticize him for not knowing how to sing, and they say
his voice is made up of isicathamiya (Acapella). He says they are jealous of him.
They read to him a newspaper article about Nomhi's boyfriend Nizma. This made
him think about how he would use Nomhi's secret (her boyfriend is in jail). Matesh
and Thembi say he must go back to Nomhi and not worry about being rejected, es-
pecially now that Nomhi is still dealing with her boyfriend’s arrest. Duke doesn't
seem to want to go back to Nomhi.
