CPTD: Emotional Intelligence + Change
Management
Ruler Model of EI
Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions
is an evidence-based approach to emotional learning (Brackett 2019)

Ability model of EI
The four branch model of emotional intelligence proposed by Salovey and
Mayer, that identified four areas of capacities

The four branches of their model are, “arranged from more basic
psychological processes to higher, more psychologically integrated
processes.

Trait Model of EI
This model, such as that developed by Petrides (2001: 425-448), breaks from
the idea that emotional intelligence is based on abilities. It argues that people
have emotional self-perceptions and traits that form part of their personality.
These are self-identified by the person rather than scientifically measured and
might include self-identifying levels of assertiveness, self-esteem and
happiness, for example.

In layman's terms, trait EI refers to an individual's self-perceptions of their
emotional abilities. This definition of EI encompasses behavioral dispositions
and self-perceived abilities and is measured by self report, as opposed to the
ability-based model which refers to actual abilities, which have proven highly

,resistant to scientific measurement. Trait EI should be investigated within a
personality framework. An alternative label for the same construct is trait
emotional self-efficacy.

Mixed Model of EI
The model introduced by Daniel Goleman[24] focuses on EI as a wide array of
competencies and skills that drive leadership performance. Goleman's model
outlines five main EI constructs:

Self-awareness – the ability to know one's emotions, strengths, weaknesses,
drives, values, and goals and recognize their impact on others while using gut
feelings to guide decisions

Self-regulation – involves controlling or redirecting one's disruptive emotions
and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances

Social skill – managing relationships to get along with others

Empathy – considering other people's feelings especially when making
decisions

Motivation – being aware of what motivates them

Goleman includes a set of emotional competencies within each construct of
EI. Emotional competencies are not innate talents, but rather learned
capabilities that must be worked on and can be developed to achieve
outstanding performance. Goleman posits that individuals are born with a
general emotional intelligence that determines their potential for learning

, emotional competencies. Goleman's model of EI has been criticized in the
research literature as mere "pop psychology"

Lewin's Three Stage Model of Change
1940s, Kurt Lewin, a physicist and social scientist, came up with a CM model
with 3 stages:

Unfreeze

Change

Refreeze

Kotter's Change Model
An eight-step framework that is a useful way to think about the critical
elements necessary to create successful change interventions.
