Objective One: Patient Electronic Access
Objective Two: Coordination of care through patient engagement.
How will it affect me as an advanced practice nurse?
These two objectives, I instantly connected with not only as a health care provider but as a patient as
well. As an advanced practice RN, working in a women’s health clinic, patients access to their electronic
data is important. It is important to have this information at a fingertip as a pregnant patient, because
the offices are not always open, and if a patient presents to the hospital needing medical care, they are
able to pull up their prenatal records for the provider that is attending the situation. As an APN, I will
implement a system with all new patients, where myself or someone trained in doing so goes through
the online accessible information with the patient and instructs them how to use it when needed, etc.
This brings me to my next point of patient engagement. As a health care provider and an APN, patients
begin involved in their own care is always the goal. Without their involvement and engagement, their
care cannot be one hundred percent controlled or managed, because the provider is not with the
patient all the time. For a gestational diabetic mother who is trying to control her sugars with diet, the
provider will not be there to tell that mother what to eat and what not to eat, or what sugar levels are
acceptable and what is not. This is where engaging the patient comes into play. As an APN I will educate
my patients on how to prepare themselves for what will come, what could possibly come, and how to
