Medical App Critical Appraisal
, MEDICAL APPLICATION WITH PATIENT SCENERIO 2
I. NAME: The name of the app I was assigned wasLactMed based on my birth month of
August.
II. AUTHOR: LactMed was developed and maintained bythe National Library of Medicine’s
and is part of the Toxicology Data Network (TOXNET). The application is updated monthly,
and TOXNET is reviewed weekly for new updates. The material offered in the LactMed
database is originated from scientific literature and public databases and shows the
professional expertise of the creators and review board ("Drugs and Lactation Database
(LactMed)," 2019).
III. ENDORSEMENT: The app is maintained by the US government, the National Library of
Medicine (NLM), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the US Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS).
IV. OPERATION: Both platforms are suitable for the app because they both offer the same
information. The only thing I found different is on the website is you can create a list of
medications that would be useful for a single patient.
V. AESTHETICS: The information is very easy to use and does not require instruction. The
app has only two options either find drug by name or by class, and once in the selected
option you have a search bar that allows you to type in the name of the medication or
substance. The website does have more options and requires more navigation than the mobile
app but is still easy to navigate.
VI. PURPOSE: LactMed is a database of over 1,000 drugs and other chemicals that nursing
mothers may be subjected to("Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed)," 2019). It includes
information on the levels of such substances in breast milk and infant blood and the
potentiallyharmful effects in the nursing infant. Suggested therapeutic substitutesfor
