Vulnerable groups are everywhere in the United States, nearly every facet of a
community has individuals within it, that suffer in silence. In this assignment I have chosen to
identify and define individuals suffering from mental conditions and a variety of impacts that
factor into the lives of these individuals. Additionally, I will analyze the intersection of social,
political, and economic factors affecting vulnerability for this respective group of individuals.
Next, an in-depth look into my hypothetical model for a new program containing; issues and risk
factors experienced by the selected population., health needs of the group and a proposed
continuum of preventative care, and lastly, proposed services my hypothetical program will
include for individuals.
Individuals suffering from mental conditions come a variety of complex diagnosis such
asdepression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, along
with a variety of other debilitating mental conditions. These individuals are heavily impacted by
their age and income. Starting with age, it has been reported by Mental Health America identifies
age is not a defining characteristic for mental conditions. It is supported by the following
findings, “9.7% of youth in the U.S. have severe major depression, compared to 9.2% in last
year’s dataset. This rate was highest among youth who identify as more than one race, at 12.4%.”
This disproves that factors in individuals that age is a common variable in mental health
conditions, there is no discrimination between those who are young and those who are older. In
the same report it is stated that individual’s income are heavily involved factors relating to these
individuals. Its is reported that, “10.8% (over 5.1 million) of adults with a mental illness remain
uninsured.” (Access to Care Data 2021, (2020) thus have little to no access to care which
