Real Life Memory Errors

Errors in an individual’s memories are common and more so today than ever. Several factors are

to blame as people are relentlessly participating in rushingwith all the demands that life puts on

them. As technology has increased,it is clear that this has only added to the errors that the

memory may make. Many people take their memories for granted, not realizing it is such a

prevalent part of our day-to-day lives. It seems that only when our memorybecomes distorted or

we forget something do we begin to pay attention and realize something is wrong. When the

memory fails,Daniel Schacter calls this the“seven sins of memory,” including transience,

absentmindedness, blocking, persistence, misattribution, bias, and suggestibility (Robinson-

Riegler& Robinson-Riegler, 2021). I will be focusing on the memory error of suggestibility.

Preschool abuse story had a few memory errors that jumped out at me when I began reading the

article. This paper will also discuss the consequences that may have happened due to these

memory errors and how they could have been prevented.

The Mc Martin Preschool abuse story is about a daycare accused of molesting and abusing

hundreds of children in 1980, which the accusations were deemed to be false later. The case

began with one child making an accusation, which was later found to have a parent that had

paranoid schizophrenia. After the first child made the accusation, the police sent letters out to

over two hundred parents letting them know their children could have been abused and told the

parents to ask their children specific questions. Research shows that parents often unintentionally

suggestively ask children questions, leading to false reports and might jeopardize children’s

memories. Children may then start to believe these events that have been suggested to them and

therefore give false answers to questions they were already asked over several times.

As the story progresses, social workers were brought in to interview children. It was found that

many of the interviews that had been conducted by social workers were suggestive and that

many of the children had been pressed into saying they were abused. As our textbook states,

suggestibility is when someone is led to a false recollection, this can include asking prompting
