HA425_Operational Analysis and Quality Improvement

, Introduction

The quality of healthcare and ways to improve this within the United States is crucial to

our future in healthcare. Quality improvement programs are important in healthcare because it

helps with patient experience, employees are more efficient and provide a safe and sanitary

environment. Managing the quality of care can be difficult, but with our healthcare system

working hard to reduce cost and save lives it can be done one step at a time.

Part 1

Explain the historical evolution of healthcare quality improvement programs.

The evolution of healthcare quality improvement programs began back in the 1800’s with

the father of hygiene, Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian doctor employed at the Vienna General

Hospital. At the time, many women during childbearing were developing fevers and would die.

This mainly happened with women that gave birth in a maternity ward ran by the doctor and was

less likely with maternity ward ran by midwives (Marjoua,2012). After doing some research he

found that the doctors would have earlier performed autopsies and the debris on their hands from

the autopsy would carry over into the maternity ward causing the death of these women. After

his findings, Semmelweis demanded that everyone wash their hands with chlorine which led to a

major decrease in the death rate. This determined for the first time that washing hands could stop

infection.

Another historic event that led to the evolution of healthcare quality improvements were

with an English nurse by the name of Florence Nightingale. In 1854, Nightingale sailed to

Crimea to take care of many soldiers that had fallen ill during the war due to poor living
