Recurrent Miscarriages: Hormone Therapy Versus Anticoagulant Therapy

Miscarriage is an inevitable event when pregnancy is lost before 20 weeks (Haas, et al.,

2019). About 15% of pregnancies result in miscarriages and although a low percent of these

couples experience recurrent miscarriages, meaning three or more, the emotional and mental

disturbances that these parents or future parents go through are profound (Haas, et al., 2019).

Risk factors for miscarriage can be due to “autoimmune factors, genetic disorders, poorly

controlled diabetes” (Haas, et al., 2019, p. 5). These are just a few named factors but sometimes

the reason behind miscarriages can be unknown which is heavy, frustrating news for partners

also leads to a difficult treatment plans (Shang, et al., 2015).

Evidence-Based References and Summary

Like previously mentioned, sometimes there is no definite reason to why partners have

reoccurring miscarriages. However, it has been indicated that a probable cause of a number of

miscarriages can be from a lack of progesterone levels in early pregnancy which is a crucial

hormone needed to line the uterus for a favorable implantation of the egg (Haas, et al., 2019).

Evidence from a randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that perhaps giving

progesterone can reduce the chances of miscarrying for partners who have experienced multiple

miscarriages (Haas, et al., 2019). As far as the route of administering progesterone, (by mouth,

injection, in vagina) it did not show significant impact to know the best way for administration

(Haas et al., 2019).

Another evidenced based study showed the role of progesterone in reoccurring

miscarriages. One of the role of the Corpus luteum plays is secreting progesterone to prepare for

implanting the fertilized egg thereafter, human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) levels will
