Networking with TCP/IP Unit Assignment #2
Purdue University Global
IT283: Networking with TCP/IP
Unit Assignment #1 Part One:
1. After Reading Chapter 3, write a brief paragraph outlining the function of each of the
following IPv4 header fields.
“a. The type of service field is the field that allows routers to follow a specified path type. It has
two components: Precedence and Type of Service. The precedence prioritized the traffic while
the type of service specifies the path the traffic follows.
b. Time to live is the remaining distance the packet can travel. It’s the amount of hops a packet
can take on it’s way to the destination.
c. The Protocol field indicates what is coming next, such as number 6 “transmission control
protocol (TCP)”.
d. The Header Checksum field provides error detection on the contents of the IP header only.
e. The option field exist primarlily to provide additional IP routing controls. Such as “Stream
ID, or Time Stamp”. (Tittel, J.L.C.L.C. E. 2012, paraphrased)
, Unit Assignment #22
2. Review both Chapter 3 and RFC 2460. Write a brief paragraph outlining the function of
each of the following IPv6 header fields.
“a. The Traffic class field is the 8-bit field for use by originating nodes and/or forwarding routers
to identify and distinguish between different classes or priorities of IPv6 packets.
b. Flow labels are used to label sequences of packets to request special handling by IPv6 routers.
c. The Payload Length is the16-bit unsigned integer. Length of the IPv6 payload, i.e., the rest of
the packet following this IPv6 header, in octets.
d. The Next Header is the 8-bit field that immediately follows the IPv6 header. It uses the same
values as the IPv4 protocol field. It includes protocols such as “TCP”, “Routing Extension
Header”, and “IP-in-IP Encapsulation”.
e. The Hop Limit is the 8-bit unsigned integer. It decrements by one each time it is forwarded by
a network node, and the IPv6 packet is discarded if the value in this field reaches zero. 255 Is
the maximum number of possible hops.” (Steve Deering & Robert Hinden, 1998, paraphrased).
3. IPv6 Extension Headers are used to extend the functionality of packet transmissions. Create
a table of the IPv6 extension headers (name and brief definition) discussed in the text and when
each extension header would be used.
Extension Header Definition
Hop-by-Hop Options Extension Header Used for the support of Jumbograms or, with
the router alert option. An integral part in the
operation of the IPv6 multicast though
Multicast listener discovery and RSVP for
IPv6.
Destination Options Extension Header Provides a method for extending the IPv6
header to support options for packet handling.
Can appear in more than one location.
Routing Extension Header Supports strict or lose source routing for IPv6
addresses though which the packet should be
routed.
Fragment Extension Header Support communication using fragmented
packets.
Authentication Extension Header Designed to specify the true origin of a packet
by preventing address spoofing.
Encapsulating Security The header that is used to encrypt data.
Payload Extension Header and Trailer Followed by authentication checksum to
protect against attackers.
