How Does Roy’s Adaptation Model Look in My Advanced Practice?
Roy’s Adaptation model (RAM) includes five elements which are “adaptation, person,
environment, health, and goal of nursing” (Butts & Rich, 2018, p. 458). Its purpose serves
individuals to reach their goals to health, created by both nurse and patient, by finding ways to
adapt while engaging with the environment. I was drawn to this model and would like to
incorporate this in my future practice as an APRN because this model is built on holism in that
spirit and body is unified affecting an individual to find purposefulness (Butts & Rich, 2018).
The assessment portion for a patient is in-depth while noting behavior responses to environments
(Vaz da Costa, Araújo Luz, Freire Bezerra, & Santiago da Rocha, 2016). This is a valuable factor
in creating the care plan specific to each patient and not each disease. Vaz da Costa, et al. (2016)
describes how RAM emphasizes the importance of an individual to come to awareness with self-
role that will guide me, as a provider to enhance self-independence in their own health journey.
Rosińczuk, Kołtuniuk, Górska, and Uchmanowicz (2015) explains, “not only somatic problems
but also psychological problems” (p. 128) can be assessed using this model in order for
individuals to learn how adapting to certain new life situations can support the healing and
overall enhance their life conditions.
