For task 2, I chose to write about the respiratory syndrome coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak in
2019-2020. In this paper I will discuss this international outbreak, the epidemiological
determinants and risk factors, the route of transmission, the impact on my community at a
systems level, the reporting protocol for an outbreak in my community and two strategies to
prevent outbreak in my community.
B. Description of a chosen international outbreak
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the official name of this disease is the
Coronavirus disease COVID-19 and was termed as such on February 11th, 2020. The name of
the actual virus that causes this disease is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus
2 (SARS-CoV-2). On December 31st, 2019, the WHO shared information that the Wuhan
Municipal Health Commissionin Wuhan, China was reporting increasing cases of “viral
pneumonia.” On January 1st, 2020, the WHO requested more information on the cluster of
atypical pneumonia cases in Wuhan and activated the WHO Incident Management Support Team
(IMST). On January 9th, 2020, the WHO reported that Chinese authorities have determined this
outbreak of “atypical pneumonia” was caused by a novel coronavirus and probably surfaced in a
Chinese seafood and poultry market. On January 20th, 2020, the WHO Director-General
declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency. The next day, January 21st,
2020, the first reported case of COVID-19 was reported in the US (WHO, 2020). This disease
has continued to spread globally, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), as of September 18th, 2020, there are 31.2 million confirmed cases of
COVID-19.
