The Biopsychosocial model is a system that addresses a patient’s biological,
psychological, and social factors and then assesses how these factors affect the patient’s health,
illness, and health care delivery. When each of these factors are appropriately addressed
improvements in patient care, patient adherence, and recovery outcomes increase. This approach
requires the interdisciplinary team to openly collaborate with a shared goal of enhancing the
patient’s well-being (Wade & Halligan, 2017).
My current field practice is at Unity Health in Searcy. It is a hospital that services all
demographics. I think the use of the biopsychosocial approach would be beneficial in my
practice because it addresses a patient’s health in multiple ways. The problem this approach
focuses on, is the health and well-being of a patient, and ways to improve them. As expected, the
medical staff would assess the patient from a biological standpoint to identify if the patient has
any issues within their body’s organisms, tissues, and cells. A social worker would assess the
patient from a psychological lens and evaluate behaviors, mental health, self-esteem, as well as
things such as coping skills and social skills (if there is an issue with a patient’s mental health, I

will then consult the psychiatric team). The social worker also addresses the patient’s social
system and evaluates if there are any family issues, what type of environment the patient resides
in, and their support system. This approach focuses on a patient in both a micro and macro level
and considers the illness to be a result of either a social, biological, or psychological factor.
Research on the Biopsychosocial Approach
There is a lot of research and numerous studies available regarding the biopsychosocial
approach. One article “The biopsychosocial model of illness: a model whose time has come” is a
research article that evaluates research regarding the approach over the last 40 years. The article
implies that the holistic biopsychosocial model can foresee that people will face illness without
underlying pathology. Other systems have failed to be able to do the same. The article states that
25% of hospital patients have problems that are not accounted for by any disease, which is why
this approach is beneficial because it addresses other factors that can contribute to illness and
disease. This approach is valuable because it is more holistic and utilizes a patient center method,
which requires a collaboration upon disciplines, which results in more successful patient
outcomes. This approach also aids in cost reductions for the agency because resources are shared
between disciplines, and it contributes to a more productive, sustainable health system (Wade &
Halligan, 2017).
