A. Summary of Business Situation
A large gold mine in rural Nevada uses a heap leach process to extract gold from the ore
using a high concentration cyanide solution that percolates through the heap. The cyanide
solution, which dissolves gold as it works its way through the heap leach pad, also collects the
mercury, which precipitates and accumulates in the process areas causing environmental and
health hazards. The mercury causes numerous health and safety issues as well as increased costs
and fines due to the collection, handling, transportation, and disposal. The gold mine wants to
know if it can use an environmentally friendly mercury precipitation chemical to precipitate the
mercury out of the fresh “barren” solution before it is sent up to the top of the heap leach pad.
The mercury will then stay on top of the ore pile, where it will remain permanently and not
reenter the solution. The mine conducted a test to determine if there is a significant difference in
mercury levels between the treated and untreated solution.
The null-hypothesis would be there is no significant difference between the treated and
untreated solution streams. The alternate hypothesis is that there is a significant difference
between the treated and untreated solutions, drastically reducing the level of mercury and
increasing the chance of success that the mercury will stay on top of the heap leach pad.
