After spending the last four weeks looking at the OD consultant role and how they can
affect an organization process and development by bringing the organization together to
improve, I believe the OD consultant role is not something that I would pursue as a
career path.
What sways you away from the OD field
One of the main reasons I would not consider the OD consultant role is because
the consultant has to spend a lot of time with the client trying to pursue the client to
engage in activities and process for improvement. While this does fascinate me on a
personal level, I think that I would become to frustrated with having to always be
thinking that I need to sugarcoat the message to receive the job with an organization.
“Consultants also need to influence the OD process as they do not have positional power
to delegate the activity that has to occur to implement change. They also need to be
persuasive about what routes of action might work more effectively in the organization”
(Bierema, 2020). While the statement is true for an external consultant hired by the
organization to come and help change and fix issues, the internal consultant that is hired
to work directly for the organization, has a much easier road to having the positional
power within the organization to delegate the activities and to get the staff to be involved.
When looking at the concepts and actions of an OD consultant that would keep
me from pursuing that as a career, I look back at our reading material for the class and
really start to focus one pivotal action research stage that would keep me away from
becoming an OD consultant: The doing stage. While I know I function well in the
planning stage and even the checking phase once parameters have been set up, it’s the
