City Center Hospital is in Kansas and the organization performs outpatient

surgeries. The CEO, Director of Nursing, and the Human Resource Manager have

noticed that their three main staff departments are not getting along, which has created

low morale for the nurses. The main complaint from senior leadership is the relationship

between doctors, nurses, and unit managers. This relationship is damaging the

organization’s mission and values.


The CEO is concerned about losing valuable physicians because of the perceived

lack of leadership skills the unit managers are presenting. The unit managers are

concerned about how much stress the nurses are taking on and believe it is the

physician’s fault. The focus of the OD consultant is to develop a common focus and how

to train the team to create a unified and united team through strong leadership.

Problem Identification


The critical problem is the lack of leadership within the hospital and the

communication between staff. This is a huge problem for the hospital and must be

addressed. While lack of communication seems like a simple solution, the staff need to be

brought together to correct the communication issues which might in turn help with the

lack of leadership the organization is facing. This is the perceived notion from the senior

leadership team. While the consultant has not formed the correct actions or research

model to use, if the leadership and communication is creating low morale within the

organization, the consultant needs to spend time with each staffing department to create a

sense of where the leadership is and where might the breakdown of communication exist.
