Applying Learning Theory to Life
Psychology of Learning PSY331
In the early 1930s, learning theoristsdrilled down their beliefs to conclusions like cats learn to
kill mice as opposed to the behavior being innate, all ofour fears are acquired, and intelligence is solely
, due to experiences(Ertmer & Newby, 2013).Learning theories have evolved and can echo the title of
Loretta Lynn’s 1979 hit single and claim, “We’ve Come a Long Way Baby”. I am going totalk about the
four types of learning theories that helped shape our advancing understanding how learning happens.
These beliefs can be used as tour guides to help us navigate variousteaching methods, learning
techniques, and strategies that will lead to better learning. The four learning theories we will touch one
are behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and humanism.
Behaviorism is a concept concerned with stimulus-response behaviors that can be
observed. Because the behavior is observed, it can be studied in a methodical manner helping
to further support the argument that psychology is scientific. Behaviorism focuses on behavior
observed as opposed to cognitive events (Rosser-Majors, 2017). Psychological behaviorism
suggests that the environment teaches humans and animal behavior, and learning is attributed
to stimulus-response. The reward or punishment experienced by stimuli is what causes
learning.
In contrast to Behaviorism, cognitivism is based on thinking or our mental processes. This
theory is founded on the notion that humans process information they obtain rather than
merely, responding to stimuli.Behaviors are still observed but only, as ansignof what is the
individual is thinking.
Constructivism on the other hand is based on the premise that we all construct on our
own perspective of the world based on our own experiences. This type of learning is based off
how individuals interpret and create the meaning of their experiences.
