,Chapter 1: Introduction

Enterprise definition
A complex system of cultural, process and technological components that interact to
accomplish strategic goals; under the ownership or control of an organisation; which
ultimately strives to create wealth for its stakeholders and operates at one or several
locations.
1. Culmination and co-existence of a “business model” and “organisation” that is
used to create and deliver products and services
2. A purposeful undertaking, one that requires effort/boldness
3. A body corporate, partnership or unincorporated associated carrying on a
trade or business with or without a view to profit
4. a company comprised of establishments that operate under the ownership or
control of a single organisation

The term “enterprise” refers to the culmination and co-existence of the business
model and the organization that is used to create and deliver the products and
services.

It requires that the entire organisation that delivers the product is concurrently
developed (designed, deployed, and managed)

Enterprises continuously go through change cycles:
– products,
– target markets,
– organisational restructuring etc.
• Why?

• Goal of any enterprise:
– to either create or maintain a competitive advantage over your competitors with the

Definition - Enterprise Engineering: Enterprise engineering is the discipline
concerning the design and the redesign of enterprises, regarding both their business
(models) and organisation.

A paradigm presents a mutual agreement as to how a design challenge (the enterprise)
should be understood and addressed, before a solution is proposed.

The enterprise engineering paradigm states that:
– The enterprise is a complex system.
– The enterprise is a system containing processes that can be engineered both
individually and holistically.
– Engineering rigor transforms the enterprise.
– Enterprise characteristics can be modelled, and operations can be simulated to
experiment with different design configurations.
– The more comprehensive the design, the more realistic the modelling results.

, 1.2 HOW TO EXECUTE CHANGE & IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

Competitiveness is created by the level of innovativeness of the enterprise

Innovation is thus the vehicle to execute a change cycle (that increases the
competitive advantage of the enterprise)

Innovation is thus a core-competency that is crucial to the long- and short-term
success of an enterprise.

The greater the capability to innovate, the more likely the enterprise is to succeed.

Those that go through the most change cycles translates to competitive advantage.

The Vision describes what the enterprise aspires to become, and it should be:
• Appropriate,
• Inspiring,
• Directing
• Focusing
• Guiding
• Unique

The Mission describes what the enterprise should be doing (how to achieve the vision),
