Philip Zimbardo once said, “Human behavior is incredibly pliable, plastic.”
It goes without saying, people are social creatures. We possess a need to be a
part of something bigger than ourselves, a group. This need often controls how we
think. It molds those thoughts into behavior; and behavior determines who we are or will
be. Human behavior is influenced by social situations and other people.In his famous
study The Stanford Prison Experiment, Zimbardo’s research illustrated how substantial
the impact of social influence can beon an individual’s behavioral response. My
intentions with this paper are to explain in detail the definition of social psychology,
discuss the application of social psychology in the prison system, and then provide an
example of how social research is beneficial within prison system.
Defining Social Psychology
Social psychology uses scientific approaches to understand and interpret how
the perceptions, emotions, and behavior of individual people are affected by the real,
assumed, or inferred presence of other fellow humans(Fiske, 2018). Social
psychologists try to explain how other people influence our thoughts, feelings, and
behavior; how we form impressions of other people; and why stereotypes and prejudice
flourish.To take this definition a step further, social influence is not the only factor
contributingto the understanding of behavior, social perception and social interaction are
also vital constituents.
Behaviors often change depending on the social environment at the time. The
people around us shape our thoughts, feelings, moods, attitudes, and perceptions. The
presence of other people has the tendency to impact decisions and choices that we
