A1. Leadership Concepts & Theories
The first leadership theory that I have recognized as important in my time at my current job and my time in school at WGU is that of the Transformational Leadership Theory. A good leader will not only steer their company into a brighter future, but they will also lift up and bring as many of their employees with them as possible. Through the Transformational Leadership Theory, a leader should instill in their followers a sense of value and trust. A transformational leader can inspire and challenge their followers to propel them forward.
Another leadership theory that has been displayed throughout my career is the Transactional Leadership Theory. While, not having as broad of a focus as transformational leadership, transactional leadership theory can still hold a significant place in your repertoire. A transactional leader will focus more on rewards for motivation of their followers. To maintain a balance there is a give-and-take that forms the transactional aspect of this theory. It is imperative in this theory to be able to identify the needs of your followers so that you can then offer to fulfill
those needs in exchange for their hard work and dedication to you and the company.
The Situational Leadership theories speaks to me in that it suggests that no one single theory is perfect for all situations. In my time in healthcare business management classes and my ATKINSON, MICHAEL

time in real world situations I’ve experienced many different forms of leadership; some good and
some bad, but I think all could be improved by being able to adapt in the moment and utilize what you have at your disposal. Not every follower will respond in the desired way to every leadership method, so diversifying your ideas and methods towards the different leadership theories would be beneficial.

I want to use transformational leadership to help myself and my followers become better employees, coworkers and leaders by building each other up, developing a trust bond, and challenging each other to move forward. Sharing this type of vision can propel the team and the business to greater heights without sacrificing the relationships and connections that can be made
along the way. I want my team to support me as much as I support them in our endeavors to succeed. The Transactional Leadership Theory is a useful philosophy to integrate into everyday use because it will help me, as a leader, reach the goals that were set for the company. The idea that every person has a want or need that they hope to meet in exchange for their hard work and commitment to the cause holds some truth. A professional balance needs to be upheld in order to be successful in business.
Having a strong grasp of multiple leadership concepts and theories can help you adapt to any sort of leadership that different situations call for. I want to incorporate the Situational Leadership theory into my methods of leadership by taking stock of the climate around me and recognizing the strengths and weaknesses in my team to decide leadership theory I’ll lean more heavily on.
