Discussion Board Week 6

Nursing Leadership and Management

Florida National University

, Running Head: Discussion Board 2

1. Describe a situation in which the nurse manager would use problem resolution

in the workplace. Describe a situation in which the nurse manager would use

negotiation to resolve a conflict (or potential conflict) in the workplace.

Conflict occurs frequently in any workplace; health care is not an exception. The

negative consequences include dysfunctional team work, decreased patient

satisfaction, and increased employee turnover. Conflicts of various magnitudes occur

frequently. You share a workspace with a colleague who consistently leaves the space

disorganized and messy, which seems unprofessional to you since patients are seen in

that office. To begin this process, it is important to cultivate self-awareness in regard to

one's physical and emotional reaction to situations involving conflict. The most common

responses on approaching conflict include: avoiding, accommodating, competing,

compromising, and collaborating. Negotiation is the most basic means of settling

differences. A nurse explained that an important strategy nurse manager should

implement is to hold conflict resolution training sessions for nursing staff so that any

minor conflicts can be resolved successfully by nurses themselves.

2. Compare and contrast strategies for resolving a conflict, using first the

informal negotiation method and then the formal negotiation method.

Negotiation is a method by which people settle differences. It is a process by which

compromise, or agreement is reached while avoiding argument and dispute. In any

disagreement, individuals understandably aim to achieve the best possible outcome for

their position (or perhaps an organization they represent). The flexibility in making offers

creates ample room for the negotiators to reach an agreement that satisfies both sides.
