Special Education Interview

While discussing Co-teaching this week reminds me of teaching as a paraprofessional in

an all-inclusive special education building where I was able to work alongside amazing staff. A

couple week ago I reached out to two of my old co workers to interview them for this

assignment. As a paraprofessional I worked under Brooklyn Howard who was the main teacher

in the classroom. She is currently working in another school district as an LBS1 teacher. I was

able to meet with her via Google meet to go over a series of questions.

One of the main topics we discussed that we both agreed on is that confidentiality is key.

Not even confidentiality within the school but also not discussion our students with other

teachers in other classes and grade levels. The privacy of the student is important to keep

because we can control what information we share but we can not control what others will do

with classified information. Not only is it the ethical thing to do but as a teacher we have a legal

right to the parents of the student to not exploit them. The best way to ensure we keep

confidentiality is only discussing students with their main teacher, administration and only relay

specific information to other specials if it will be affecting their services. Brooklyn also added

that making sure important and private documents are kept locked away.

Another take away that I had gotten from my interview withBrooklyn, that I plan to use

in my future career, would be to not let the student use their disability as an excuse. Not labeling

student by their disability can help with this, also letting the students tell their peers about their

disability and not you as the teacher. When discussing with Payton who is now a classroom
