Grassland Biome and Ecosystem
There are many different kinds of biomes and ecosystems ranging from the tundra to the
deserts. One of the largest biomes and ecosystems on the plant is that of the savanna grasslands.
This massive biome and ecosystemhas a land mass of nearly 5,000,000 square miles (University
of California Museum of Paleontology 2020). This essay will focus on the savanna grasslands.
The savanna grasslands can have many characteristics such as being tropical, flooded grasslands,
or temperate (Reid, 2019). The grassland biome has biotic species such as the various types of
grass, insects, and predatory animals including lions and hyenas.
Ecosystems have a keystone species that help to maintain the ecosystem. The keystone
species that maintains the ecosystem of the savanna grasslands is the elephant. The elephant
tramples thick shrubs which helps to prevent growth of larger trees. In addition to smashing
brush, elephants also eat the acacia tree which prevents thick growth of trees. This creates the
opportunity for smaller species to co-exist (Gichohi, 2018). This also enables animals who graze
to have more grass to consume. With more grazers having more grass to consume, this results in
predators having more grazers to feed on. These are just some examples of why the African
elephant is the keystone species of the savanna grasslands. However, even the smallest invader
can have the potential to negatively affect a massive biome and ecosystem like the savanna
grasslands.
