I have selected Latino/Hispanic Americans group for the purpose of this study. The
health status and the effect of race and ethnicity on the health of this group will be discussed
briefly. While discussing the nutritional challenges of this group, I have explained the barriers of
their health due to culture, socio-economic status, and educational status. I have identified the
health promotion practices and appropriate health promotional care plan relevant to this minority
population. Appropriate culturally competent health promotion strategies have also been
identified and explained in detail.
Latino/Hispanic Americans Minority Group
Latino/Hispanic Americans are encompassed of people from countries such as Mexico,
Cuba, Puerto Rico, and countries within South or Central America. The population consists of
native born, foreign born, migrant workers, and undocumented persons, and they give much
importance to the family and family decisions and are very strong in their prayer life. They rely
on folk healers and home remedies including rituals, herbs, use of medals and amulets, and
prayer (Falkner, 2018).
Health Status of Minority Population
The major leading cause of death for Latino Americans are cancer, cardiovascular disease
(CVD), stroke, unintentional injuries and diabetes mellitus (DM). Studies show that “Central and
South American adults had similar or better health than the non-Hispanic U.S. population, while
Puerto Rican adults had worse health than the non-Hispanic U.S. population. Puerto Rican adults
were also generally more likely to have poorer health compared with other Hispanic subgroups,
and Central or South American adults were generally less likely to have poorer health compared
