Dissociative disorders are characterized by significant impairments and disruptions of an
individual’s perception, memory recall, self-identity, or consciousness (Butcher, Hooley, &
Mineka, 2014). These individuals may often present as disengaged from current reality. These
disorders are less understood than many other mental health issues, leading to increased interest
and awareness among the professional psychological community. The DSM-V described three
distinctive groups of dissociative disorders: Dissociative Identity Disorder,
Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder, and Dissociative Amnesia. The following will
address the characteristics of Dissociative Identity Disorder, the current peer-reviewed research
on the disorder, a conceptualization of the disorder from a cognitive-behavioral perspective, and
common methods of treatment.
Characteristics of Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is characterized by the manifestation of separate and
distinct personality identities in a single person (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014).
Professionals refer to the individual’s “real” identity as the “host identity. These separate
identities, or personalities, control of the individual’s behavior and attention alternating for
periods of time. Patients with DID commonly exhibit the following symptoms: Frequent
headaches, abnormal behavior, depressive symptoms, hallucinations, self-injurious behavior, and
suicide ideations, post-traumatic symptoms, and symptoms associated with an amnesic fugue
(Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014). Comorbidity is common in patients with DID, most often
with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but often present with five or more co-occurring
disorders. This disorder is commonly believed to be the result of childhood trauma, where the
