Paraphilia is defined as being sexually aroused by objects, nonconsenting persons, or
torment and degradation to oneself or others (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014). Many
individuals that have paraphilic interests live relatively normal lives free from adversity and even
report a high level of sexual satisfaction and life satisfaction by participating in paraphilic
behavior. Problems arise when these inclinations begin to cause distress to the individual, harm
to others, or cause negative consequences or legal ramifications. Society continues to hold a
negative association with individuals with atypical sexual interests. Fear of judgment or stigma
can prevent individuals who are struggling with problems associated with these preferences to
seek treatment. The following will address characteristics of paraphilic disorders, peer-reviewed
research, a conceptualization of these disorders from a biopsychosocial model, and the
effectiveness of treatment methods.
Characteristics of the Disorder
The DSM-5 discusses specifies common paraphilic disorders. Voyeurism involves
observing another individual engaging in sexual activity without their knowledge. Exhibitionism
involves indecent exposure to a nonconsenting person. Frotteurism refers to nonconsensual
touching on another person’s genitals. Sexual sadism and masochism involve becoming sexually
aroused by inflicting or receiving pain or humiliation. Pedophilia involves sexual attraction to
young children. Transvestitism involves wearing clothing commonly associated with the
opposite sex. Fetishism involves sexual arousal from an inanimate object or attraction to a non-
sexual body part, such as feet (Holoyda, 2019). There are many other variations of fetishism
which are not specified in the DSM-V, which share characteristics but differ only in the object of
an individual’s preference. The DSM-5 classifies these paraphilic interests as disorders when the
