Salt Lake City

Geographical Description

The city is the most populated city in the Utah state. Additionally, it is the capital

of the state. The City has the Great Salt Lake as its surrounding. The city is

surrounded by some ranges on the Northwest and Southwest by the mountain ranges.

The mountains that surround the City are the Watch and the Oquirrh mountains. The

mountains contain some glacial canyons. The city is duly separated from the lake by

the vast midlands and also Mudflats.

Climate Type

The lake adjacent to the city affects its climate a lot. Additionally, it is

surrounded by vast mountains. This makes the City have an ideal climate which is

reminiscent of the mountain and the lake adjacent. The city has four major seasons

which are the snowy winter, summer, cold and two transition seasons (Hoonwerg 45).

The climate could be defined as sub-humid and not semi-arid as it is the claim of

many. Regarding the Koppen Climate Classification standards, the regions climate

could be described as a blend of both the Humid Subtropical Climate (Cfa) and the

hot-summer humid continental climate (Dfa). Additionally, the region experiences

very dry summers throughout the whole year. The climate in the region is mainly

influenced by the Pacific Ocean which is closely adjacent to the city. The Ocean

contributes to frequent storms in the city between May to October. The wettest season

of the region is spring.

The region often experiences snow falls during the Winter season which is

motivated by the Salt Lake. The town receives precipitation from the moisture

emanating from the Californian Gulf in the time of summer. The summers in the town

are usually very hot. Apparently, they often reach high temperatures of 38 0C. On the

other hand, winters are usually very cold and also very snowy. However, the Rocky

Mountains surrounding the town often contribute to warmer winters than one would

often expect. These mountains contribute to warm winters because they block polar

highs which would otherwise affect the state. During winter time, temperatures

usually stay above -180 C although they maintain their position below the freezing

point. In the time of winter, the town often experiences temperature inversions which

result to overnight fog in the town.

Temperature and Precipitation Changes

The city experiences the coldest month in January at a low of -1.6 0c. The lowest

temperature ever recorded in the city was in the year 1990. The record was set at a

maximum low of -16.70 C. The City begins to experience the summery weather at the

onset of May when temperatures tend to rise. However, the temperatures do not rise

too much. This is because the city is somewhat elevated. Also, the cool breeze from

the city cools it down leading to a slightly low temperature in the time of summer

compared to other parts of the worlds which share the same latitude.
