What are the characteristics of standard normal distribution The HR department of
an organization collects data on employees age, salary, level of education,
gender, and ethnicity. Which data do you think is more likely to follow normal
distribution? Explain why.
ANSWER:
The idea of standard normal distribution is thought of the probability something will
happen along a curve that has a mean of zero and a standard deviation of 1
(“Wordiq”, 2010). This can be shown with what is known at a bell curve where the
majority of occurrences happen within a certain area and within each standard deviation
the occurrences will decrease along the probability scale.
Depending on the company many of the examples could be normally distributed within
one company and not normally distributed within another company. In fact looking at the
different categories of age, salary, education, gender, and ethnicity in most companies
none are actually normally distributed. To make age normally distributed the company
would have to achieve a very low turnover rate and many of the employees would have
to stay long enough to retire from the company and only have to hire new employees
when someone retires. Salary to be normally distributed would fit with the idea that age
is also normally distributed because many times the longer you work for a company the
more money you will make and the idea that the employees will all get promoted along
with his or her peers to keep it distributed normally. Education would be the easiest
especially in companies that use manual labor for the majority of their workforce. Gender
and ethnicity are usually ones that separate the groups to establish a normal distribution
curve and by itself is not normally distributed.
