What kinds of jobs are needed in an organization?

When asked what “kinds” of jobs an organization needs, it means, what type of positions are
necessary within an organization to make it a success. The framework of an organization as the
text describes has to have those that do the labor and those that they report too. It is important
that the organizer decide how deep the reporting will go, so that the question “who is running
things?” is answered (Allen, Attner & Plunkett, 2013).

The last chapter of the text covered strategic planning and organizing is included in that process
(Allen, Attner & Plunkett, 2013). Early in the development of the organization, the owner usually
covers both positions, managing and labor but as time goes on and the organization begins to
grow the Organizer’s position may require someone with organizing experience since there are a
lot of questions that need answering.

This position requires the ability to estimate the number of staff members needed to run the
operation. How many people will manage the operation? How deep the managing will go? Will
there be a need to have frontline supervisors that report to an upper level manager? Will the
organization require trainers? Will there be a need for a hiring crew? Will there be a need to hire
specialist? Just to name a few. Selecting an experienced organizer is very crucial to an
organizations success (Allen, Attner & Plunkett, 2013).

How has specialization of labor, or division of labor, been implemented in an organization in
which you have worked (or researched)?

Every organization that I have worked for has had some type of specialization position available.
I was the Transplant Specialist within a claim shop for many years, selected because of my Point
of Service experience and Group return error experience. It worked out beautifully, it was
something that I complained about often which is probably why it was created and given to me. I
was given a team of examiners, an auditor, two nurses, a negotiator, and a network manager
and we cleaned up an area that had been damaged for several years and we continued to run
the transplant unit until the claims department was sent to another state.

I also was a part of creating an overpayment team that also lasted until the transfer. The
overpayment team became specialist they were experience claim examiners who worked high
dollar claims and understood HMO, PPO and POS contracts, they could reprocess the claims and
either request the overpayment or pay additional money in a timely manner so that the claim
shop was not required to pay interest.
