5-2 Final Project Milestone Two
When oil spills accidently happen and spill into any water system,it can leave severe
impacts for many years to come. There are many at-risk populations, and these populations
consist of marine life, workers at the accident, clean-up workers, and residents. For starters, when
oil is spilt into the ocean, it “destroys the insulating ability of fur-bearing mammals (sea otters)
and the water repellency of birds” (National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration, n.d.).
Without these two key things, marine animals can diebecause of hypothermia. Birds can
accidently poison themselves when attempting to clean themselves off. Whales and dolphinscan
inhale the oil and cause significant health impacts (reproduction and immune disorders). Lastly,
other marine life animals like coral, fish, and shellfish are impacted, but not immediately.
However, once impacted, it can “reduce growth, enlarged livers, changes in heart and respiration
rates, fin erosion, and reproduction impairment” (National Oceanic and Atmosphere
Administration, n.d.).
The other at-risk population of oil spills are humans (workers, clean-up crews, and
residents).According to research, “workersnear the accident are exposed to the highest levels of
volatile organic compounds” (McCoy & Salerno, 2010). Offshore clean-up workers are at-risk of
inhaling VOCs. Not to mention that these workers are also impacted by heat, burning oil,
combustion, and more (McCoy & Salerno, 2010). Onshore clean-up workersare exposed to a
wide variety of things such as exposure to heat, beaches that’s been contaminated, waste that’s
being disposed, and weathered oil(McCoy & Salerno, 2010). Last but not least, residentsare at-
risk because it can leave a detrimental effect on their water supply, the beaches, the quality of air,
and quality of food.
