You are a psychologist at Mainline Consultation Services. Your company is approached by
Alloy Marketing Solutions (AMS). AMS is a marketing and advertising agency responsible

of the company hired us to assist in finding a suitable applicant for the creative director
position. Creative directors are senior-level managers who oversee the production and quality of
all creative assets a company or brand puts out.
The job occupant must have a suitable qualification (a bachelor’s degree in graphic design,
marketing or related fields), with at least seven to ten years of experience. The previous creative
director relocated abroad, and the company is seeking a competent substitute.
The formal roles of the position include:

Based on your knowledge of personology you decide to base the interview questions on the
social cognitive learning approach as well as on Viktor Frankl’s existential theory. The
social cognitive learning approach would be useful in terms of providing an overview of
individual’s behavioural dispositions, learning attitudes and locus of control. Whereas, Viktor
Frankl’s existential theory could provide a perspective of the person’s values, meaning
attributions, level of optimal development and mindset.

The relevance of the social cognitive learning approach

The creative director position requires one to be self-motivated with the capacity for self-
regulated learning in order to adapt to company procedures, update skills and acquire
knowledge of how to use innovative technologies.

The creative director is also required to perform competently under pressure and meet strict
deadlines. Therefore, the applicant must have high levels of self-efficacy. Lastly, because this is
a leadership position, the applicant must have an internal locus of control and attribute all their
successes and failures to their own efforts and not to external circumstances.

Interview questions based on the social cognitive learning approach should therefore be aimed at
identifying individuals with a capacity for self-regulated learning, high levels of self-efficacy
and an internal locus of control.

The relevance of Viktor Frankl’s Existential Theory

The applicant must have a meaningful regard towards their work as a way of contributing to the
company’s vision and their own life satisfaction. Thus, the applicant must consider their job a
vocation and not just a means of remuneration.

The job requires full responsibility for actions, decisions and consequences. Therefore, the
capacity for self-determining action is critical. The leadership position necessitates that the
applicant is objective in their judgement and focused on innovation and improvement. Thus, a
realistic perception on life and a future-orientation are imperative. Creativity is an integral
part of the position. And so, the candidate must have strong creative values and regard for how
their innovation meaningfully impacts others.
