What are the general recommendations in an exercise protocol for overweight or obese
clients to aid with their posture problems and low back pain? - ANSWER Strengthen the
abdominals + stretch the hip flexor muscles
the excessive abdominal fat mass often leads to lower abdominal strength and the hip
flexors are tight due to moving a large mass around. Due to the large abdominal mass
and the weak muscles of the area, core exercises must often be modified for the obese
client. Obese clients may also want to strengthen the upper back and stretch the chest
muscles.
If a client's goal is to bench press 300 pounds, what type of goal is this? - ANSWER
Performance goal
this goal is based entirely on the client executing the desired action (bench pressing 300
pounds). Performance goals are intermediate on the continuum of personal control.
They are also more difficult to achieve than process goals.
Process goal is based on behavior. Outcome goal is based on a result that cannot be
performed by the client.
What is an advisable training session for a client recovering from a stroke? - ANSWER
Cycle ergometer at 30% VO2 max
The compromised physical and cardiovascular ability of this client. A client who recently
had a stroke will have compromised limb function in terms of both strength and balance
and should therefore only use an ergometer to start. In addition, clients become rapidly
deconditioned after a stroke and will begin at a very low exercise intensity.
Treadmill walking at 30% VO2 max is incorrect because walking is not advised due to
lack of strength and balance. Cycle ergometer at 50% VO2 max is incorrect because
this exercise intensity is too high for this population.

How can a personal trainer evaluate the level of exercise readiness of a client? -
ANSWER Assess the motivation and commitment of the individual
this can predict the readiness and compliance of a client. Discussing past experiences,
appreciation for exercise, availability of support, time management and organizational
skills, and potential obstacles can aid in assessing motivation and commitment. There
are also paper tests available that are sensitive to predicting levels of exercise
readiness.
, Determine the goals of the client is incorrect because this gives insight into the purpose
of the client, as opposed to their commitment. Assess the suitability and
appropriateness for training the client is incorrect because this is more useful in
determining the client-trainer compatibility.

When spotting a client performing the flat dumbbell fly, where should the spotter place
their hands during the downward and upward movement phases? - ANSWER Near the
client's wrists
The flat dumbbell fly exercises require the use of a spotter for safety purposes. The
client is supine on a bench, and the spotter should stand at the end of the bench near
the client's head. The spotter will hand the dumbbells to the client who will hold them
right on or above the chest. The spotter will help the client lift the dumbbells to the
starting position, with the dumbbells held above the chest, palms facing in and arms
slightly bent with the elbows pointing out to the sides.
The client lowers the dumbbells out to the sides and lifts them back up without flexing or
extending the elbows. During the exercise, the spotter will place their hands near the
client's wrists and follow the client's arms throughout the entire movement. This allows
the spotter to provide immediate assistance if needed. Placing the hands near the
elbows or the hands does not provide the spotter the same ability to help a client who
gets stuck or loses control of the weight as they have near the wrists.
It's important not to hold the client's wrists throughout the movement to prevent
restricting their movement and to allow them to perform the repetitions without
assistance, only providing help when necessary.

What effects does resistance training have on peak oxygen consumption? - ANSWER
No Effect
No effect is correct because cardiovascular endurance training is required to improve
VO2max and a lack of intense aerobic activity will decrease VO2max. Although higher
heart rates are observed with resistance training, the total metabolic demand is less
than with aerobic endurance training, which may account for the difference in
adaptations. Resistance training can support cardiovascular training by increasing
running efficiency.

For the YMCA step test, how many steps are completed over the test duration? -
ANSWER 72 steps
72 steps is correct because 24 steps are taken per minute and when calculated over
three minutes, 72 total steps are taken. The YMCA step test measures heart rate
