Conflict Exam Two Solutions

Problem 1 (26 points):

You must show all your work to receive credit. That includes limits to any integral,
closed paths or areas of integration, and proper vector notation.

toroid with N1windings,
each winding carrying a current I1

A toroid has N1 turns, with an inner radius a , outer radius b , and height h . The toroid
has a rectangular cross section shown in the figure above left.

a) When a steady current I1 is flowing in the direction shown in the figures above
through the toroid, find a vector expression for the magnetic field inside the toroid
as a function of distance r from the axis of the toroid in the region a < r < b ?
Express your answer in terms of N1 , a , b , h , µ0 , I1 , r , rö , »ö , and kö as
needed.

b) A very long solenoid with N 2 turns, length d , and radius w is placed at the
center of the toroid with a slowly varying increasing current I 2 (t) with the
current flowing in a direction as shown in the figure below, and such that
dI 2 / dt = c where c is a positive constant.

You may assume d is very long, so you can ignore edge effects. Find a vector expression
for the magnetic field due to the solenoid in the region 0 < r f w where r is the distance
from the axis of the solenoid in the region.

Express your answer in terms of N 2 , w , d , µ0 , r , I 2 , c , rö , »ö , and kö as needed.

c) Now suppose a circular ring of radius s for a < s < b is placed inside the toroid,
lying in a plane particular to kö -direction. Find the magnitude of the electromotive
force in the circular ring.

Express your answer in terms of N 2 , w , d , µ0 , r , I 2 , c , s , rö , »ö , and kö as needed.
