Ancient Mesopotamia 101 :
● The land between tigris and euphrates
● Inhabited for 12,000 years
● Agriculturally thrived
● Blossomed into some of the world's first cities
● Unified under Akadian empire then split to Assyrian and babylonian
● Constant warfare but thrived
● Temples was ritual locations
● Advanced mathematics
● Map and studied the sky
● Create zodiac
● Separated the weekdays
● Literacy developed, sophisticated writing form called cuneiform
● Babylon too rich
● Cyrus conquered babylon
● Became a foreign empire
Personal comments/thoughts: It is so shocking to see that Mesopotamia was so rich and
thriving with natural resources that blossomed into some of the world's first cities. I find it
interesting that they were able to create a system to count the days as well as naming them and
being the first to discover what we call today as “zodiac signs”. The people of this land were
highly intelligent especially since they had advanced mathematics and shared their practices
with the other empires such as assyrian and babylonian. However, I find it very tragic that
Babylon was conquered by Cyrus and it became an empire with foreign rule. I can only imagine
how the inhabitants of the empire felt and the constant warfare that continued. My question is,
after foreign rule was in place, did the citizens of Mesopotamia try to overturn the ruler or did
they surrender to Cyrus as well ?
