Exam Study Guide with Questions &
Correct Answers
Sclera - ✔tough, white outer coating of fibrous tissue that covers your entire eyeball (all
the way around) except for the cornea.

Choroid - ✔dark brown membrane that is rich with blood vessels, located between the
sclera and the retina. It supplies blood and nutrients to the retina and nourishes all of the other
structures within the eye.

Vitreous - ✔jelly-like substance that fills the inside of the back part of the eye. Over time,
the vitreous becomes more liquid and can detach from the back part of the eye, which can
create floaters.

Retina - ✔light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside surface of the eye, much like wallpaper.

Optic nerve - ✔electrical impulses that were converted from incoming light in the retina
are carried to the brain, which finally interprets them as visual images.

Macula - ✔small sensitive area in the center of the retina that provides clear central vision.

Pupil - ✔The opening of the iris, that light shines through.

Iris - ✔Contains muscles that allow the pupil to become larger (dilate) or smaller (constrict);
regulating the amount of light that enters your eye. In bright lights, your iris constricts and in dim
lights your iris dilates.

Cornea - ✔functions as a window and allows light to enter you eye. It also begins the
process of focusing light rays that allow you to see words and images clearly.

, Aqueous Humor - ✔clear, watery fluid contained in a chamber behind the eye that helps bring
nutrients to the eye tissue. Problems with the flow of aqueous fluid can lead to problems with the
pressure inside the eye, such as glaucoma.

Ciliary muscles - ✔attached to the lens and contract or release to change the lens shape
and curvature.

Lens - ✔composed of transparent, flexible tissue that helps to focus light and images on your
retina after the cornea. Ciliary muscles cause the lens to become more rounded to focus on near
objects and more elongated/stretched to focus on objects that are far away. Overtime, the lens
loses some of its elasticity and therefore loses some of its ability to focus on near objects. This
is called Presbyopia and explains why people need reading glasses as they become older.

Fovea - ✔located in the center of the macula and provides the sharpest detail vision.

Zonular fibres - ✔ring of fibrous strands connecting the ciliary body with the crystalline lens
of the eye.

Suspensory ligament - ✔ligament or fibrous membrane suspending an organ or part,
especially; a ringlike fibrous membrane connecting the ciliary body and the lens of the eye and
holding the lens in place.

Hyaloid canal - ✔is a small transparent canal running through the vitreous body from the
optic nerve disc to the lens.

Retinal blood vessels - ✔the blood vessels that carries blood away from the retina of the
eye; the counterpart to the central retinal vein is the central retinal artery, the blood vessels
that carries blood into the eye and supplies nutrition to the retina.

Snellen Eye Chart - ✔Eye chart containing various letter sizes
