Discussion for BIO lab
Water flowed out of the potato cells but was determined on the concentration of
sucrose, this is supported by mass of the potato being greater in the beginning of
the experiment than it was at the end with the increase in sucrose. Tonicity can
interpret that the beakers containing higher concentration of sucrose were
hypertonic and the beakers containing water were hypotonic. This is shown by how
much mass the potato gained when in water and lost when put in the solution
containing more sucrose. The unknown for the class data was x= 0.09 m and for
the group data it was x= -0.0045 m. The general trend for both parts is that water
moved from the area of high concentration to the area of low concentration, in turn
supporting osmosis. In Part II, the dialysis experiment, water and glucose crossed
the membrane. The data supports this claim, because of the change in color. I
determined if diffusion or osmosis occurred in the dialysis experiment by
examining the color change in the solution and weight of the bag. If the solution or
bag turned blue/black or weighed heavier, it would have shown the diffusion of
starch into iodine. Since this was not shown, it can be said that water and glucose
moved from a high concentration to a lower concentration because of the presence
of it in the solution.
HW questions
1. Which substances were able to move through the dialysis tubing? How do
you know? What was not able to move through the membrane? For the
substances that moved through the membrane, which direction did they
move? Was this with or against their concentration gradient?
The substances that crossed the membrane were water and glucose. The data
supports this claim, because of the change in color and the water testing positive
for glucose, but the beaker water not reacting to iodine. The starch was not able to
move through the membrane. With osmosis, it moves water through the membrane
from a higher concentration to a lower concentration, so with their concentration
gradient.
2. What data do you have to support that this movement took place?
The data that supports that this movement took place is the consistent increase in
percent change in mass with each increase in the concentration of sucrose. This
shows that the increase in sucrose contributed to a mass change in what passed
through the membrane and what didn’t.
