BLACK BOX ALERT Serious, potentially fatal, infections, including bacterial sepsis,
tuberculosis, have occurred. Lymphomas, other malignancies may occur (reported
in children/adolescents).
Assess onset, type, location, duration of pain, inflammation. If significant exposure to varicella
virus has occurred during treatment, therapy should be temporarily discon- tinued and treatment
with varicella-zoster immune globulin should be considered.
Intervention/evaluation
Assess for improvement of joint swelling, pain, tenderness. Monitor erythrocyte sedimentation
rate (ESR), C-reactive protein level, CBC with differential, platelet count. Observe for signs of
infection.
Patient/family teaching
• Instruct pt in subcutaneous injection technique, including areas of body acceptable as injection
sites. • Injection site reaction generally occurs in first mo of treatment and decreases in
frequency during continued therapy. • Do not receive live vaccines during treatment. • Report
persistent fever, bruising, bleeding, pallor.
