, New York City introduced LinkNyc in the mid 2010’s. The city decided to replace the
payphones around the city with Wi-Fi hotspots. These old pay phones were converted to Wi-Fi
hotspots (fiber optic network) in the form of kiosks. These kiosks will provide a public, free and
super-fast network. Users can also make nationwide phone calls, charge devices and browse city
maps and services on the kiosk using a built-in tablet.
The LinkNYC kiosks were commissioned by the city and developed by “ CityBridge, a
consortium of companies including Intersection (a portfolio company of Alphabet Inc.’s
Sidewalk Labs), Qualcomm and CIVIQ Smartscapes” (Mcketta, 2017). Citybridge provides
access to the city, the public and other ISP’s. The kiosks provide a fiber optic network which
uses 802.11ac Wave 2 access points with support for 4×4:4 MU-MIMO. The fiber optic network
is made possible by the physical installation of fiber cables that carry data at the speed of light.
Each kiosk's hotspot can reach up to 150ft-400ft radius.. This network is also faster than most
networks, capable of speeds up to 1gigabytes. The download speed on the linkNYC network
surpasses that of any mobile network. Consumers might prefer using the LinkNYC network for
its speed if they live close enough to a kiosk to access the network. LinkNyc kiosks are funded
by advertisements displayed constantly on its 55’ screen which saves the city and the developers
money. A project such as this will be expensive because it requires the installation of fiber cables
and kiosks. The kiosks will also need frequent maintenance and updates. All of the mentioned
tasks require capital.
