, Milestone One: Building Models

The Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is an organization that represents veterans

throughout the United States, during the year they send out various physical marketing

advertisements like flyers and free mailing labels (Sharpe, De Veaux & Velleman, 2018). To

better their results and become more efficient, the organization has compiled data on their

respondents that have sent in donations in the past. Using past donor data, the company will be

using the data to determine what factors contribute to the likelihood a person will donate and as a

result how they can maximize their marketing efforts to increase their donations.

The dataset provided represents 3648 donors that responded to the marketing attempts

with a donation of varying sizes. The dataset is broken down into 26 variables and the response

variable of the gift amount. This dataset will address the problem of maximizing their marketing

efforts to send out to those who are most likely to donate, but it fails to assess the variables

related to those who do not donate and their potential reasons for not donating. Figure 1 shows

the central tendency table for the data set based on the response variable, gift amount (measured

in dollars). The mean donation is 15.72 dollars, the median donation is 14 dollars, the mode

donation of the set is 10 dollars. The data set has a standard deviation of 12.03 and a variance of

144.70. The minimum donation sent is 1 dollar and the maximum 200 dollars, resulting in a

range of 199 dollars. A histogram, figure 2, of the gift amount shows the data is skewed to the

right with an outlier of 200 dollars.

To maximize efficiency for receiving donations, the PVA should focus on zip codes that

contain 20% - 40% male veterans. Figure 3a and figure 3b display that there is a higher

frequency of donations from people in the zip codes containing 20% - 40% of male veterans.

When looking at these zip codes, the PVA should consider households that have zero to one
