Phosphorous CyclePhosphorous is required for many biological process

Phosphorous is a limiting nutrient that is often added to fertilizers
There is not any atmospheric component to the phosphorus cycle

Biotic
Assimilation- producers incorporate phosphorus from the soil/water into their body
tissues
Mineralization- the process that converts organic matter from dead organisms back into
inorganic phosphate during decomposition
Abiotic
Sedimentation- phosphorus is not very soluble and precipitates out of solution to form
sediments
Geologic Uplift- long geologic process where sediments are lifted up to form mountains
Weathering- the phosphate rocks are slowly worn down by weather events (ex:rainfall)
which makes phosphorus available for living organisms
Note: Since phosphorus is NOT very soluble, very little leaches out of the soil an into
water bodies. This makes phosphorus a limiting nutrient in aquatic ecosystems
