Cancer Exam Questions and Answers
Can youn define cancer/neoplasia? (Think
growth) - Answer-A malignant, invasive disease in which cells become abnormal and
divide uncontrollably. May spread throughout body,

What is the difference between benign and malignant? (Think location) - Answer-A
benign tumor remain in one location, single, well-defined mass surrounded by capsule,
and may be surrounded by connective tissue. Cell division is more rapid than normal,
cell structure and function is slightly abnormal.
A malignant tumor is a where cancer cells invade normal tissue and enter the blood and
lymph. Metastases form at distant sites. Cell division is rapid and completely out of
control while cell structure and function is very abnormal. Cancerous. Abnormal cell
structure; may appear undifferentiated, may spread, edge of tumor not clearly defined

A few of our billions of cells turn cancerous
all the time. What prevents us from
developing the disease cancer? (It's one of the
systems) - Answer-The immune system can identify if a cell changes to a cancerous
self if it stops making "self" proteins or proteins that are abnormal and can be destroyed
if immune system is functioning normally.

Can any cell become cancerous? - Answer-Yes because it is a mutation of cell division
and differentiation.

What do we mean when we say a cancer has
metastasized or undergone metastasis? - Answer-Metastasis are secondary, malignant
tumors at other locations. Changes in cell may break away and invade normal tissue or
enter blood or lymph. Invading cells may form new colonies called metastases and
cancer that invades and metastasizes is called a malignant tumor.

What is the relationship between genes that regulated cellular behavior and genes that
are
often associated with cancer. - Answer-If a regulatory gene is mutated or damaged they
can stop functioning properly and can contribute to cancer.

What is an oncogene? a tumor suppressor gene?
How are they related? - Answer-Oncogenes are mutated or damaged proto-oncogenes
while a tumor suppressor genes are regulatory genes that repress cell growth, division,
differentiation, and adhesion.
May also be turned off, damaged, or mutated in cancers.
They are related because if oncogenes are not regulated by the tumor suppressor
genes they can become unchecked and continue becoming cancer.
