, Role of Ethics
Ethical Implications and Ramifications
In this scenario, assistance is being given to the forensic psychologist. The forensic
psychologist is being brought in to help with obtaining accurate eyewitness identification. Being
that this is the only evidence it is important to remain impartial and objective throughout the
investigation. According to Code 3.06 Conflict of Interest of the American Psychological
Association (2017), “Psychologists refrain from taking on a professional role when personal,
scientific, professional, legal, financial, or other interests or relationships could reasonably be
expected to (1) impair their objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing their
functions as psychologists or (2) expose the person or organization with whom the professional
relationship exists to harm or exploitation.” Because this case involves an 11 year-old girl being
sexually assaulted and murdered, a forensic psychologist must take extra precaution to proceed
throughout in a professional manner and remain objective regardless of any personal feelings or
biases that may be present.
Potential Risks
One potential risk that may arise within this scenario is the identification of the role of the
forensic psychologist. According to Code 3.07 Third Party Requests for Service of the APA
(2017), “When psychologists agree to provide services to a person or entity at the request of a
third party, psychologists attempt to clarify at the outset of the service the nature of the
relationship with all individuals or organizations involved”. This includes determining what role
the forensic psychologists has such a consultation or expert witness. This also includes
identifying who the client is such as the police department, the detective, or the lawyer. This is
necessary to correctly provide services and identify degree of confidentiality and limits thereof.
